I got only 1 rig - not hundreds on my bench. But the technician certainly spoke out of experience which I do not have.

If I compare the schematics correctly I would rather suspect a damage to the microphone than the rig. and I think that the pin numers are also upside down in this schematic. According to Yaesu pin 8 is left and pin 1 on the right if viewed "from" the front panel. Unfortunately the author got the pin numbers upside down. The problem with the MH-36 is that it is *not* connected according to the schematic.Īnd here the pinout of the MH-36E8J. As long as everything is connected according to the schematic there ought not to be a problem. That is certainly there for the benefit of those OMs who like to adapt their own mics.

The FT-991A manual page 17 shows the mic connector's pin-out. The desk mic, which Yaesu offers as option for the FT-991A is the MD-200A8X. I got a telephone interface but have no plans to connect it to my landline - no use anymore with Smartphones. The MH-36 I put aside and am not very sad about it since there are no repeaters in ZP anymore and DTMF isn't really necessary for me. To remedy the situation I just used the original MIC-31A8J which came in the box together with the radio. At least it will be easier to program the memories now. I got the RT Systems software, installed it on my PC, connected the radio, powered it up, and low and behold it was able to download and save the memories and menu settings, just like I do for my Yaesu handheld. The memory channels were well filled with repeaters all over the state as well as separate CW, SSB, and DATA memories for HF. I'm still running the 2018 firmware and I had changed nothing on the radio when it stopped working. While I was looking for a solution to the talkpower problem of the FT-817, I came across this blog post (in German) where OM Anton presented an extremely simple modification of the MH-31 mic. Worse yet, electret microphones decay! Yes, that’s right, they have an expiration date! Although Wikipedia claims that they will work for hundreds of years (how do they know?), this strikes me as very un-ham-spirit-like. However, those electret mics are a little suspicious to me: first, unlike dynamic microphones, they require power – while the Yaesu radios can deliver it via the microphone cable, this strikes me as somehow inelegant. Other OMs assured me that it can work and that I just need to find the right capsule… I actually tried the electret mic mod, but with no luck – the audio sounded terrible, even though I tried different electret capsules. There are many solutions to this problem, from replacing the dynamic microphone capsule with an electret mic to HF clipper circuits. When it comes to punchy audio on SSB, the Yaesu FT-817 is notoriously weak.
